New St. Tikhon's Prayer Book

I have been looking forward to the new St. Tikhon's prayer book for quite a while. I heard a mention of it almost a year ago, I think, I now I finally have one in my possession. If you are one of those who would like to buy one, but have noticed that they are on back-order, I apologize. The second batch should make it to the St. Tikhon's Bookstore soon.

Initially, I would like to share some of the features of this prayer book for those who wonder if they should order one and do not have a chance to pick one up and thumb through it, but then eventually, I would also like to share some of my little "hacks" for the book: things like marking tones to aid in singing and how I use some of the information included here that most prayer books do not have.

So, to start off, here are some of the reasons I love it:

  • Every page has a page heading so you can more easily find what you are looking for.
  • It DOES NOT include Liturgy, which is a large section of many books that usually goes unused.
  • It has a list of the main saints for the day, so you can easily commemorate the saint of the day without the need of some other resource.
  • It has a wealth of extra prayers: for those times that you feel like you have a little extra time and want to do something extra or maybe when you have a bit more need for something in particular, there are several canons and akathists, as well as short prayers for a lot of different situations.
  • It is good looking. For something that I look at and use every day, I do not need it to be cheapy looking.
I think St. Tikhon's has really hit a home run with the Orthodox Christian Prayers prayer book. And I will share more later why I think that is the case.

What to Do in Place of Liturgy

I have never used Typica so much as I am now, that is, now that we are quarantined away from church due to the CoronaVirus. The Typica service, in the same way as Small Compline is more appropriate for use at home than Vespers , is not a Liturgy replacement. It developed as its own service to be celebrated by those who are distant from clergy, without a choir, and without any additional resources to do a service. Not only it is the appropriate service to serve when you cannot go to Liturgy, it is perfect for our self-quarantined, isolated situation. So, if you would have normally gone to Liturgy on a Sunday morning or a feast, but are not able (like if you were quarantined at home due to a pandemic or something), this is what is usually used. It is formatted so that you can print it out, two-sided, and fold it into your own Typica booklet. If you want to take it a step further, you could staple it (but only if you have a really long stapler) or sew/tie it together. I sewed it.

One Concept for Paul and Two Words in English

Whole theologies have been formed and rampant misunderstandings have deeply entrenched, all on account of this one little Greek word: δικαι- [dikai-]. In Greek, this one root word forms the verbs, nouns, and all other parts of speech, which are then later translated into various words in English: justification, justice, justify, to judge, righteousness, the righteous ones, upright. Our understanding of St. Paul will increase dramatically simply by finding a way to read him with his original word choice, not using two words in English for one concept for St. Paul. In the passages below, all from Romans, every time St. Paul chooses a word built on that Greek root, it will be replaced with “DIKAI”, instead of using an English word, so we do not fill in our English nuance of the word; any lowercase additions on the front or end of DIKAI are to indicate the verb tense or a prefix.
